O Lord, Almighty God of our fathers! who hast made heaven and earth, with all the ornaments thereof ; who hast set bounds to the sea, by the word of thy command- ment ; whom all men fear, and before whose power all men tremble, for thine angry threat- ening towards sinners cannot be borne ; but thy merciful promise is unsearchable. Thou, 0 Lord! according to thy great goodness, hast promised forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee, and, of thine infinite mercies, hast appointed repentance unto sin- ners, that they may be saved. Behold, O Lord ! my transgressions are multiplied, and 1 am not worthy to look up to heaven, for I have provoked thy wrath, and done evil be- fore thee ; I have not done thy will, neither kept thy commandments. Now, therefore, I bow the knee of mine heart, beseeching thee of grace ; I have sinned, O Lord, and ac- knowledge mine iniquity, wherefore I humbly beseech thee to forgive me : be not angry with me for ever, by reserving evil for me, neither condemn me to the lower parts of the earth : for thou art the God of them that repent ; and in me thou wilt show all thy goodness ; surely thou wilt save me, though I am unworthy^ according to thy great mercy.
